When it is always the same argument

Relationships1 min read

Couples usually arrive with a list. The dishes, the phone, the in-laws, the tone she used on Tuesday.

The list is rarely the problem. Underneath it there is normally one cycle running on repeat, and the scenery just changes.

The cycle

One person moves toward conflict to resolve it. The other moves away to stop it escalating. Each move makes the other person's move more likely.

Pursuer and withdrawer both believe they are doing the reasonable thing. They both are. That is why willpower does not fix it.

What changes it

Naming the cycle out loud, together, in a calm room. Not to assign blame but so it becomes a third thing you are both looking at rather than something you are doing to each other.

After that, the work is practical: how to pause mid-cycle, how to repair afterwards, and how to raise a complaint without it becoming a referendum on the relationship.

The dishes are still the dishes. But they stop being evidence.
