Burnout is not a character flaw

People arrive at burnout convinced it is a verdict on them. They are not resilient enough, not organised enough, not built for it.
Almost always, what they are describing is a system with no slack in it.
The tell
Burnout has a specific signature: exhaustion that sleep does not fix, growing cynicism about work you used to care about, and a quiet sense that your effort no longer changes outcomes.
That last one matters most. Tiredness alone is not burnout. Tiredness plus futility is.
What to look at first
Before we talk about your habits, we look at the shape of your week — where the demands come from, what you control, and where recovery is supposed to happen but does not.
Only then do the personal levers matter: boundaries, sleep, the specific way you decide something is finished.
The order is deliberate. Fixing habits inside an unchanged structure just makes you better at absorbing an unreasonable load.
